Manfred Neuman - Biography (English)



Manfred Neuman studied music at the Musikhochschule of Cologne,Germany. Beside the french horn he worked on orchestral conducting with Prof. Klaus Pawassar and with Prof.Siegfried Köhler, the later Music Director of the Stockholm Opera.

As a horn player he worked several years at the Cologne Opera and became a member of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1975.

Neuman conducted his first public concert in 1973 at the age of 21 years. Since then he was invited as a guest conductor with numerous professional Symphony Orchestras in Germany and abroad, conducting more than 300 major works of the symphonic repertoire.

In 1988 Manfred Neuman was named Music Director of the Saarlouis Symphony Orchestra, situated in Southwest Germany.

Beginning in 1989 he worked as a guest conductor with the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra (Mexico). His programs were broadcast on radio and television and featured renowned international soloists and performances of works by Berg, Hindemith, Strauss, Mahler, Schostacovich and Poulenc.

In Mexico, Neuman appeared also as a guest conductor with the Monterey Symphony Orchestra.

In 1996 Neuman conducted two concerts of the China National Symphony Orchestra in Beijing.

In 2002 he made his first appearance in South-America conducting the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra (Ecuador).



The conductors CD-recordings include a Tschaikowsky-production with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra (1996, Bayer-Records). In 1997 a CD with french singer Romain Didier conducted by Neuman was awarded the „Grand Prix du Disque“ in Paris (Warner Music)

In May of 2002 Neuman conducted the Bavarian Radio Orchestra in Munich for a recording of french music for Saxophone and Orchestra with works by Debussy, Tomasi, Caplet, Constant and Absil among them four world premiere recordings (Audite Label).

His latest production with the german SWR-Radio Orchestra was released by the Naxos Label and features first recordings of orchestral works by the german neoromantic composer Thomas Schmidt-Kowalski, whose 3rd Symphony Neuman premiered in 2000 with the Philharmonia Hungarica.

The complet recording of Schmidt-Kowalski´s orchestral works for Naxos is in work.

Manfred Neuman absolvierte sein Musikstudium an der Kölner Musikhochschule. Neben dem Instrumentalstudium im Fach Horn studierte er Dirigieren bei Prof.Klaus Pawassar und später bei Prof. Siegfried Köhler ( Musikhochschule Saarbrücken, Königliche Oper Stockholm )

Nach mehrjähriger Tätigkeit an der Kölner Oper kam er 1976 als Hornist zum Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken.

Mit 21 Jahren dirigierte er sein erstes öffentliches Konzert. Seither wurde er von zahlreichen deutschen und internationalen Berufsorchestern eingeladen und hat mehr als 400 Werke der symphonischen Literatur dirigiert.

Seit 1989 verbindet ihn eine Zusammenarbeit als Gastdirigent des traditionsreichen Orquesta Sinfónica de Xalapa (Mexico), mit dem er mehrere Konzerte für das mexikanische Fernsehen aufgezeichnet hat und mit international renommierten Solisten arbeitete. Er leitete dabei Erstaufführungen mit Werken von Berg, Hindemith, Strauss, Webern, Mahler, Schostakovich

und Poulenc.

1996 arbeitete er drei Wochen mit dem Chinesischen Nationalen Sinfonieorchester in Peking.

Bei einem Konzert des Saarländischen Rundfunks dirigierte er Werke von Schoenberg und Mahler („Das Lied von der Erde“ in der Fassung von Schoenberg)

In den letzten Jahren gastierte Neuman u.a. bei den Sinfonieorchestern von Monterey (Mexico), Cuenca (Ecuador) und bei der Philharmonia Hungarica.



Zu den bisherigen CD-Einspielungen des Dirigenten gehört eine Tschaikowski-Aufnahme mit den Berliner Sinfonikern .

Eine unter seiner Leitung eingespielte CD mit dem französischen Sänger Romain Didier (Warner Records) wurde 1997 in Paris mit dem „Grand Prix du Disque“ ausgezeichnet.

In jüngster Zeit dirigierte er bei CD-Produktionen der Labels Naxos und Audite das Rundfunkorchester des SWR und das Münchner Rundfunkorchester.

Für Naxos nimmt Neuman das sinfonische und konzertante Werk des deutschen Neoromantikers Thomas Schmidt- Kowalski auf, dessen 2. und 3. Sinfonie er uraufgeführt hat.

Über seine Aufnahme von Debussys „Rhapsody“ für Saxophon und Orchester zusammen mit dem Solisten Dominique Tassot und dem Münchner Rundfunkorchester schreibt der Kritiker des angesehenen „American Record Guide“: „ This is absolutely the best recorded performance of Debussy´s „Rhapsody“ that I have ever heard.“

Le chef d´orchestre francais d´origine allemande recut sa formation musicale au Conservatoire Supérieur de Cologne. Après des etudes de cor et plusieurs années d´activité à l ´opéra de Cologne il est engagé en tant que corniste à l´Orchestre Symphonique de la Radio Sarroise. Neuman a etudié la direction avec le professeur Klaus Pawassar (Cologne) et plus tard avec le professeur Siegfried Köhler ( Ecole supérieure de musique de Sarrebruck, Opéra royale de Stockholm) et fit ses premiers pas de chef en 1973. Depuis il est engagé comme chef invité par de nombreux orchestres dans le monde entier.

Il fut notamment le premier chef francais à diriger l´Orchestre Symphonique National Chinois à Pékin en 1996. Depuis 1989, il travaille comme chef invité permanent de l´Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa (Mexique), avec lequel il a enregistré plusieurs concerts pour la télévision. Travaillant avec des solistes de renommé international

Neuman dirigea les créations mexicaines d´œuvres de Berg, Hindemith, Strauss, Webern, Mahler, Schostakovich et Poulenc.

Recemment Neuman a travaillé avec les Orchestres de Monterey ( Mexique ), Cuenca ( Équateur ) et avec la Philharmonia Hungarica.

Son répertoire dirigé comporte plus de 400 œuvres symphoniques et lyriques.

Depuis 1989 Neuman assure la direction artistique de l´Orchestre Symphonique de Sarrelouis ( Allemagne )

Il a enregistré un CD Tschaikowsky avec l´Orchestre Symphonique de Berlin.

En 1997 Manfred Neuman dirigeait une production CD avec le chansonnier Romain Didier qui fut couronée du Grand Prix du Disque de l´Académie Charles Gros à Paris.

Sa recente discographie pour le labels Audite et Naxos comporte des productions à la tête des Orchestres de la Radio de Munich et de Kaiserslautern en Allemagne.

Pour Naxos Neuman enregistre l´œuvre symphonique et concertante du compositeur néoromantique allemand Thomas Schmidt-Kowalski, dont il a assuré la création de la deuxième et troisième symphonie.
