George Gershwin Porgy & Bess

Die Berliner staunten nicht schlecht, als ihnen ein amerikanisches All-Star-Ensemble 1952 George Gershwins Oper „Porgy and Bess“ näherbrachte. Ebenso groß war das Erstaunen, als vor einigen Jahren ein bis dato unbekannter Mitschnitt dieses Ereignisses auftauchte.

Mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert lagerten die Bänder unerkannt im Archiv des RIAS Berlin bzw. der Nachfolgeinstitution Deutschlandradio Kultur – einfach so, ohne Katalognachweis. Die Vorstellung vom 21. September 1952 war damals weder live noch, wie der Zustand der Bänder erkennen ließ, überhaupt je gesendet worden. 2007 war das historische Dokument erstmals im Deutschlandradio Kultur zu hören, im Folgejahr erschien die sorgfältig aufgearbeitete Produktion bei audite auf CD.

Diese historische RIAS-Aufnahme entführt uns in die musikhungrige West-Berliner Nachkriegszeit: Auch sieben Jahre nach dem Krieg sind die meisten Konzertsäle nicht wiederhergestellt, gespielt wird im Kinosaal des Steglitzer Titania Palastes. Dort gastierte im Rahmen der Berliner Festwochen eine Tourneeproduktion, die im Sommer 1952 in Dallas startete und dann über Wien und London bis nach Moskau kam. Auf dem Programm: „Porgy and Bess“ von George Gershwin. Das Orchester für die elf Berliner Aufführungen stellte der RIAS, die Sänger kamen aus den USA. Und was für welche: Der wuchtige William Warfield als Porgy, auf der Bühne wie im echten Leben verbunden mit der 25 Jahre alten Leontyne Price als Bess – sie sollte daraufhin als erste schwarze Sängerin eine große Karriere in der klassischen Musikszene machen. Die Rolle des eleganten Zynikers Sportin‘ Life wurde von dem Mann verkörpert, den sich der 1937 gestorbene Gershwin bei der Komposition sogar vorgestellt hatte: Cab Calloway.

In der Tagespresse überschlugen sich die Stimmen: „Ein Stück echten amerikanischen Negerlebens“ hieß es damals bewundernd, „niemand scheint zu spielen, jeder nur sein Naturell, sein einmaliges Temperament, seine vitale Existenz schlechthin zum Einsatz zu bringen.“ Und der Großkritiker Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt pries „Leontyne Price als Bess, von frecher Dirnenhaftigkeit sich wandelnd zu verklärtem Frauentum“. Von ihrer Energie hat diese Produktion auch mehr als sechs Jahrzehnte nach ihrer Entstehung nichts verloren.

[…] More remarkable is the recently disinterred German radio tape of Blevins Davis and Robert Breen's famous all-black touring production, again under Smallens. Sponsored by the US State Department, this 'contradictory cultural symbol' reached Moscow late in 1955, albeit losing its initial lustre as original cast members moved on. Even if the 1952 recording is heard today as textually unsatisfactory (provoking the particular ire of Nikolaus Harnoncourt), it has noisy theatrical energy and provides the earliest evidence of the limitless vocal potential of Leontyne Price. Her then husband William Warfield occasionally sounds strained or lightweight but it should be recognised that he was singing from a kneeling position, authentically confined to Porgy's goat cart. The multi talented Cab Callowayas Sportin' Life is a powerful presence too, transmuting the 'dandified' stereotype into something more compelling in his celebrated rendition of 'It ain't necessarily so'. The mono sound has come up superbly. Absent however are such key elements as the glorious orchestral coda of Act 1 scene 1 when Porgy takes in Bess after Robbins's murder. The pivotal 'Buzzard Song' can hardly suggest a world turning to its dark side when it's patched into the final scene. Supporting roles are less strongly taken; the three acts become two.

Flawed as it is, this astonishingly vivid off-air recording conveys the excitement of a classic touring production featuring one of the 20th century greatest voices at the start of her career.

Starting in 1952, as a salvo in the cultural Cold War, the State Department sponsored a world tour of Porgy and Bess, choosing the work for reasons that look particularly quaint today. This set documents one performance from that run, taped at the Titania Palast in Berlin in September 1952. The edition was a hodge-podge by producer Robert Breen that changed the orchestration, cut some of the music, added a few bits (like an instrumental recap of “Bess, You Is My Woman Now” before act II, scene 3 and an extra verse in “It Ain’t Necessarily So”), and shuffled material around in a way that may throw you. (In fact, the transfer of the “Buzzard Song” to act III so confused some critics that, when Guild released this same recording last year, they mistakenly insisted it had been eliminated entirely.) But whatever you think of the political impulse and the editorial impulsiveness, it would be hard to deny that the production had a spectacular cast. The title roles were taken by William Warfield and his young wife, the then virtually unknown Leontyne Price (this may be the earliest recording of her voice to have been commercially issued); and they were supported by Cab Calloway, as well as a couple of singers who had participated in the original 1935 production (Helen Dowdy as Lily and the Strawberry Woman, Ray Yeats as the Crab Man).

Most attention, I’m sure, will be focused on Price, who sings with an astonishing purity of tone (even when she’s teasing), as well as a sure dramatic sense. From the beginning, you can appreciate the conflicts she faces, and her reprise of “Summertime” at the end will break your heart. Still, to my ears, her voice—indeed, her whole demeanor—is slightly too operatic, too cultivated. That quality is heightened by the contrast between her polish and the improvisational earthiness of the Catfish Row residents, who dig into their parts with abandon, often treating the written text as but a scaffold for ornamentation. In act I, they scorn Bess as a whore who’s beneath them; vocally, she sounds out of her element for entirely the opposite reason. Still, it’s hard not to be taken in by her vocal command and by the sheer beauty of her timbre.

Warfield is even better, with superb enunciation, a fluid control over the long cantilenas, and a warm vocal sound that instantly conveys Porgy’s inner spirit: you can well understand why he accepts Bess’s weaknesses and why he returns from jail with gifts for the whole community. Cab Calloway, as Sporting Life, is slightly less flamboyant than I would have expected, but he’s doubly seductive as a result; Helen Colbert and Helen Thigpen are superb as Clara and Serena. The only disappointment among the soloists is John McCurry, a marginally undercharacterized Crown, neither sufficiently menacing nor, in the hurricane scene, reaching the heroism of Lester Lynch on the recent Mauceri recording (30:3).

Ensemble work is exceptional. As I’ve suggested, Catfish Row is represented by singers comfortable with the vernacular traditions that Gershwin had used as his basic material: the give-and-take in the crowd scenes is utterly transfixing. Indeed, while this opera has a problematic vision at its core (it’s certainly hard to take its representation of African-American life without wincing), no other recording so successfully banishes your qualms while you’re listening—for no other recording gives Catfish Row such an infectious sense of community. Smallens, who presided over the premiere, conducts with tremendous energy, favoring quickish tempos and avoiding the score’s temptations to sentimentalize during such hit numbers as “Summertime” and “Bess, You Is My Woman Now.” This performance of Porgy took place only seven years after the collapse of a regime that banned the music as degenerate. But the Berlin orchestra brought in for the occasion seems to have transcended history quickly: they sound entirely immersed in the idiom.

The original tapes were made on what appears to have been state-of-the-art equipment, and the sound is astonishingly clear and vivid for a live recording of that vintage; Audite’s reprocessing is marginally smoother than Guild’s, although the differences are minimal. Not a first choice if you’re going to live with a single recording (I’d pick the Rattle for that), but as a supplement, this is enthusiastically recommended.

De la célèbre tournée mondiale de Porgy and Bess au début de années 1950, où la toute jeune Leontyne Price a fait sensation en compagnie de son époux, la basse William Warfield, seuls subsistaient des extraits (Naxos Historical). En voici une intégrale, captée en 1952 au Titania Palace de Berlin et retrouvée dans les archives de la Radio berlinoise, qui ne l'a apparemment jamais diffusée.

Comme le son est plutôt bon, on comprend enfin pourquoi cette production a suscité un enthousiasme planétaire. La troupe est déchaînée et le chef Alexander Smallens a le swing nécessaire. Les coupures sont nombreuses, l'orchestration réduite et le côté grand opéra, aujourd'hui mis en valeur à la scène comme au disque, est gommé. Cela n'empêche pas Leontyne Price de déployer les moyens qui feront d'elle une des grandes divas de son temps, et le chanteur de jazz Cab Calloway de camper un Sportin'Life – le dealer diabolique – avec lequel seul Sammy Davis Jr dans le film d'Otto Preminger, en 1959, pourra rivaliser.

Chef-d'œuvre incontesté, Porgy and Bess mit du temps à être reconnu autrement que par le seul « Summertime»; et bien des années s'écoulèrent avant que cet opéra à nul autre pareil ne traverse les océans. La tournée européenne de 1952 et 1953 reste pour bien des mélomanes un mythe. Elle passa par Paris et son Théâtre de l'Empire, révélant l'ouvrage dans une mise en scène de Robert Breen, mais aussi une cantatrice rayonnante, Leontyne Price, vingt-six ans, beauté sauvage et voix voluptueuse. On n'avait pas la moindre trace de ces moments, et voilà qu'arrive une captation effectuée à Berlin, au Titania-Palast, en 1952. Document d'importance en dépit de sérieuses coupures : il manque en effet plus de trois quarts d'heure de musique dans cette version « sur le vif». Comment ne pas être ému par l'enthousiasme qui se dégage de chaque mesure, par la conviction des interprètes, leurs talents de comédiens, leur spontanéité? Plus qu'une simple représentation, c'est la vie qui est là, embrasant les planches, irrésistible. Price campe une Bess impétueuse, et son timbre, s'il manque de consistance dans le registre le plus grave, est un enchantement. William Warfield (qu'elle venait d'épouser) est un Porgy bonne pâte, dont le chant déborde de gentillesse (à Paris, le rôle était revenu à Le Vern Hutcherson). Tous les autres rôles sont tenus par une équipe efficace, la palme revenant au Sportin' Life swinguant du jazzman Cab Calloway. Alexander Smallens est au pupitre, comme il l'était lors de la création mondiale en 1935, et comme il le sera encore pour les extraits gravés pour RCA par Price et Warfield; sa caution rend encore plus précieux cet album édité à partir de bandes de la Radio allemande au son particulièrement présent.

George Gershwin's ‘American folk opera’ Porgy and Bess was first performed in New York in 1935 with a cast of classically trained African-American singers. With a libretto by DuBose Heyward (based on his novel Porgy) and lyrics by Ira Gershwin, it’s set in fictitious Catfish Row in Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1920s and tells the story of Porgy, a crippled black man, and his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her pimp, and Sportin’ Life, the drug dealer. The groundbreaking music incorporates blues and jazz elements into the classical art form of opera, though the work was not generally accepted as a legitimate opera until 1976, when the Houston Grand Opera staged a triumphant production of Gershwin’s complete score. A 1952 revival by Blevins Davis and Robert Breen had previously restored much of the music cut from the original Broadway production, including many recitatives, and divided the opera into two acts, making a more operatic form. This double CD captures that legendary 1952 production and is the only official release remastered from the original master tapes in the DLR archives. The conductor is Alexander Smallens, who also conducted the original New York premiere, and the superb cast is headed by the young Leontyne Price as Bess and William Warfield as Porgy, with Cab Calloway (Sportin’ Life), John McCurry (Crown) and Helen Colbert (Clara). This a sensational rediscovery of a recording that reveals the musical and dramatic intensity of a work that Gershwin considered his finest composition. ‘There is singing, shouting, crying, arguing, fighting, intermittent praying, dancing, howling, stamping. Nobody seems to be acting but simply offering their unique temperament, vitality and sheer existence.’ - Berliner Kurier, 1952. This atmospheric release is an indispensable addition to the discography of a thrilling masterpiece.

Nous vous avons récemment parlé du Porgy and Bess avec Cab Calloway dans le rôle de Sportin' Life enfin disponible en CD. Après avoir traîné de longues années dans les archives de la radio allemande, fait quelques apparitions chez les collectionneurs ou sur Internet, il y a désormais une deuxième édition du même enregistrement du 21 septembre 1952 au Titiana Palatz de Berlin, que je vous ai présenté en juillet dernier.

La respectable maison germanique AUDITE présente donc rigoureusement les mêmes pistes, sans doute dans la même qualité sonore (formidable, étant donné les moyens de l'époque). Reste à savoir si le livret sera plus intéressant que celui édité par Guild Music.

Es gibt ja nichts, was es nicht gibt, vor allem in Funkhäusern. Über 50 Jahre schlummerte wenige Meter von hier im Deutschlandradio-Kultur-Archiv ein bislang unbekannter Mitschnitt von „Porgy and Bess“. 1952 hatte der RIAS im Berliner Titania-Palast George Gershwins Oper mitgeschnitten – nun ist die Aufnahme endlich auf dem Markt und präsentiert diverse Überraschungen: Zum Beispiel Cab Calloway in der Rolle des Sportin' Life:

Zugegeben, das ist etwas spät, aber der Mitschnitt wurde tatsächlich erst kürzlich entdeckt. Dieses herausragende Dokument war aus unbekannten Gründen nie zuvor gesendet worden. In dieser Aufführung wurde der elegante Zyniker und Gauner Sportin' Life erstmals von Cab Calloway gegeben – an den schillernden Jazz-Entertainer hatte Gershwin gedacht, als er die Partie komponierte. Und das erste Mal überhaupt kam Gershwins Meisterwerk in dieser amerikanischen Tournee-Produktion nach Deutschland – die Aufführungen im Titania-Palast waren der Höhepunkt der Berliner Festwochen 1952; die Presse begeisterte sich über diese fremdartige „Negeroper“, wie es damals hieß. Standesgemäß sah man auf der Bühne ausschließlich schwarze Sänger – an der Spitze die 24-jährige Leontyne Price, die daraufhin als erste farbige Opernsängerin eine Weltkarriere machte. Am Pult des RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchesters begleitete ein alter Hase: Alexander Smallens hatte schon die Uraufführung von „Porgy and Bess“ 1935 dirigiert, was die Aufnahme natürlich besonders authentisch macht. Hier hören wir das Titelpaar im großen Liebesduett aus dem ersten Akt – William Warfield als Porgy und Leontyne Price als Bess, übrigens auch im echten Leben ein Paar...

William Warfield und Leontyne Price als Porgy und Bess – der spektakuläre Mitschnitt von George Gershwins Oper entstand 1952. Dieses Juwel aus dem Archiv von Deutschlandradio Kultur wurde soeben bei audite auf zwei CDs veröffentlicht. Eine historische Aufnahme mit großen Solisten wie Leontyne Price und dem Gigolo Cab Calloway...

Porgy, Bess? Wer? Summertime? Was? Kaum zu glauben, dass George Gershwins so populäre, 1935 uraufgeführte amerikanische Volksoper vor 60 Jahren in Deutschland kaum bekannt war. Zu gründlich hatte die braune Kulturpolitik „artfremde“ Einflüsse unterdrückt – obwohl „Porgy And Bess“ von der Faktur her durchaus in der europäischen Operntradition steht.

Zwar war das Stück 1943 in Kopenhagen – gegen den Widerstand der Nazis – und 1946 in Zürich (in deutscher Sprache, übersetzt von Ralph Benatzky) aufgeführt worden, doch die wahre Initialzündung für die Rezeption hierzulande war die Tournee der „Everyman Opera Company“ aus den USA mit Gastspielen unter anderen in London, Wien und Berlin – Letzteres im September 1952 im Titania-Palast. Es wurde zum Triumph. Auch der damalige Kritikerpapst H. H. Stuckenschmidt geriet in Verzückung („...aber wie rauscht, jubelt, klagt und tanzt das über die Bühne!“, schwärmte er). Dass diese Produktion nun auf CD vorliegt – nachdem vorher offenbar nie abgespielte Bänder eines Mitschnitts im Archiv des Deutschlandradios gefunden wurden – ist eine erneute Sensation.

Die Aufführung mit dem legendären Porgy des William Warfield, der blutjungen Leontyne Price als Bess (vermutlich ihr erstes Tondokument!) sowie mit Cab Calloway- der als Sportin' Life sich selbst spielt, war er doch Gershwins Vorbild für diese Figur – reißt durch ihren Elan vital noch immer unmittelbar mit. Die monaurale Wiedergabe ist dabei kein echter Nachteil. Einzig das unter Alexander Smallens schmissig spielende RIAS-Unterhaltungsorchester klingt in den Streichern etwas dünn. Dennoch: wunderbar.
