Jonathan Ferrucci describes himself as "addicted" to Bach. For the Florence-born pianist of Australian-Italian heritage, Bach's music constitutes an inexhaustible universe: "Immersing yourself in a full cycle of works gives me a deeper understanding of the music." Following his audite recording of Bach's Toccatas, Ferrucci now turns to the six English Suites.
For his interpretation, Ferrucci has deliberately chosen a modern concert grand piano, a Yamaha CFX. Combining its rich tonal possibilities with a highly nuanced touch, personal ornamentation, long-spanned dramatic phrases and flexible tempo choices, he presents a reading of Bach that is both distinctive and unmistakably contemporary.
The English Suites - whose title, added at a later date, remains something of a mystery - were composed during Bach's years in Köthen and reflect the musical fashions of the period. French dance movements are paired with préludes in which Bach engages with the then highly innovative Italian concerto style. At the same time, these works reveal the very complexity that Ferrucci finds most compelling in Bach: virtuosity, expressive depth and compositional sophistication combine to create one of the most significant cycles in the keyboard repertoire.
