Biography

Hermann Reutter was born in 1900 in Stuttgart. Following his schooling he studied composition with Walter Courvoisier, piano with Franz Dorfmüller and organ with Ludwig Mayer at the Munich Academy of Music until 1925. He began his career as pianist and lied accompanist in 1929, which brought him together with all the important conductors and interpreters of his time.



In 1932 Hermann Reutter became a composition teacher at the Stuttgart Music Academy. Further stations in his professional career were the directorship of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main (later Frankfurt Academy of Music and the Performing Arts) in 1936, a professorship in composition and lied interpretation at the Stuttgart Music Academy in 1952 and further posts at the Academy of the Arts in Berlin and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1955. In 1956 he became a juror and later chairman of the jury in the area of singing at the ARD competition. From 1956 until 1966 Hermann Reutter was Director of the Stuttgart Music Academy. From 1966 until 1974 he led the master class in lied singing at the Munich Music Academy and founded the Hugo Wolf Society in Stuttgart in 1968. He travelled to the USA regularly from 1960 onwards, where he gave interpretation courses at universities.

Hermann Reutter received numerous prizes and honours for his compositional and pedagogical activities, including the Ludwig Spohr Prize, the Great Federal Distinguished Service Cross with Star, an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco and the Hugo Wolf Medal of the International Hugo Wolf Society.



He has bequeathed to us an extensive compositional oeuvre, including many operas and ballets.



Hermann Reutter died in Heidenheim in 1985.









Hermann Reutter wurde im Jahr 1900 in Stuttgart geboren. Nach seiner Schulzeit studierte er bis 1925 an der Münchner Akademie der Tonkunst Komposition bei Walter Courvoisier, Klavier bei Franz Dorfmüller und Orgel bei Ludwig Mayer. Ab 1929 begann er seine Karriere als Pianist und Liedbegleiter, die ihn mit allen wichtigen Dirigenten und Interpreten seiner Zeit zusammenbrachte.



1932 wurde Hermann Reutter Kompositionslehrer an der Musikhochschule Stuttgart. Weitere Stationen seines beruflichen Werdeganges waren 1936 die Ernennung zum Direktor des Hochschen Konservatoriums in Frankfurt a.M. (später Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt), 1952 die Berufung zum Professor für Komposition und Liedinterpretation an die Musikhochschule Stuttgart und 1955 die Berufung an die Akademie der Künste Berlin und die Bayerische Akademie der schönen Künste München. 1956 wurde er Juror, später Juryvorsitzender im Fach Gesang des ARD Wettbewerbs. Von 1956 bis 1966 war Hermann Reutter Direktor der Stuttgarter Musikhochschule. Von 1966 bis 1974 leitete er die Meisterklasse für Liedgesang an der Münchner Musikhochschule, 1968 gründete er die Hugo-Wolf-Gesellschaft Stuttgart. Ab 1960 führten in Reisen regelmäßig in die USA, wo er Interpretationskurse an Hochschulen abhielt.



Hermann Reutter erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen für sein kompositorisches und pädagogisches Schaffen, u.a. den Ludwig-Spohr-Preis, das Große Bundesverdienstkreuz, das Große Bundesverdienstkreuz mit Stern, die Ehrendoktorwürde des Music and Arts Institute San Francisco und die Hugo-Wolf-Medaille der Internationalen Hugo-Wolf-Gesellschaft.



Er hinterlässt ein umfangreiches kompositorisches Œuvre, darunter viele Opern und Ballette.



Hermann Reutter starb 1985 in Heidenheim.
