ANTONIO: Lotti – Caldara – Vivaldi Three Antonios from the Canal Grande

Le programme confronte le Nisi Dominus de Vivaldi à d’autres compositions sacrées pour alto de deux de ses contemporains vénitiens, ayant le même prénom que lui : Caldara et Lotti. Il offre une immersion dans la spiritualité si particulière de Venise au début du XVIII e siècle. L’austérité envoûtante de Caldara (Ave regina), le raffinement voluptueux de Lotti (Averte faciem tuam) sont évidemment distincts de la théâtralité vivaldienne (Cum dederit), même si un imaginaire commun préside au développement de sensibilités propres.

Le phrasé ample et naturel d’Alex Potter sert au mieux ces pages aussi spirituelles que sensuelles (Surgite du Nisi Dominus), même si certaines vocalises trouvent le contre-ténor un peu à la peine. La Festa Musicale montre également combien la sobriété et l’inspiration sont les meilleures clés pour laisser ce répertoire s’épanouir.

Three Antonios – Vivaldi, Caldara and Lotti, all close contemporaries, all pupils of Legrenzi – supply a snapshot of 18th-century Venice in this uneventful recital from British countertenor Alex Potter and German baroque ensemble la festa musicale.

The centrepiece is Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus, and the recording is also bookended by two concertos by the composer. Commercially it makes sense, but with no shortage of top-notch recordings of psalm-setting, it seems a shame to retreal musical ground when (as Potter shows us in tantalizingly small mouthfalse) there’s so much else to uncover.

Potter’s Vivaldi is nicely sung, coloratura tidy if a little querulous at times. But it’s all fairly undifferentiated. Tempos, mood and articulation are mellow to a fault – even though something like the explosive opening to ‘Surgite’ – and la festa musicale find less of the detailed textural shading and characterisation here than we hear in the concertos and stand-alone instrumental movements. There’s little bite anywhere from the band (who match Potter’s rounded, warm tone), but there is a lovely fragile sheen to the Largo of the Concerto in G minor, as well as an attractive glow in the Introduzione from Caldara’s Gionata (even if battle-inspired rhythms and fanfares seem to ask for something more forceful).

The Gionata movement is one of a variety of recording premieres, including two further instrumental sinfonias and instrumental episodes by Caldara (notably the melting, bittersweet opening from Le gelosie d’un amore utilmente crudele) and – most substantial – two sacred cantatas by Lotti: Sacri amoris aurate amate and Aurae lenes quae prata fovetis. The slow second aria from the latter, ‘Quaerit bene’, is a highlight, its graceful, languishing lines suiting both Potter and ensemble well. As a contemplation of martyrdom, however, it could have invited a less controlled performance.

There’s nothing less than attractive here, but equally little that compels with any urgency.

Es ist der Beginn des 18. Jahrhunderts: Obwohl die Serenissima gerade von einer ökonomischen Krise gebeutelt wird, steht sie kulturell in voller Blüte. Die venezianische Oper ist ein europaweiter Exportschlager, ebenso die Kirchenmusik. Drei Musiker stehen dabei an vorderster Bühnenkante, alle drei sind sie getauft nach dem Heiligen Antonius, dem einsiedlerischen "Vater der Mönche": Antonio Lotti, Antonio Caldara und Antonio Vivaldi.

Mehr muss man eigentlich nicht wissen, um dieses Album zu genießen. Denn Alex Potter und la festa musicale musizieren zwar historisch informiert, aber keineswegs fürs Museum. Spielfreude und Lebendigkeit sind oberstes Gebot der Musiker:innen. Als Würze gibt es auch noch klare Diktion, erfrischende und überraschende instrumentale (und vokale) Dialoge obendrauf.
Zudem huldigen Alex Potter und la festa musicale auf ihrer aktuellen CD nicht nur dem Antonio-Dreigestirn, sondern haben auch noch vergessene Altus-Kantaten und Orchesterwerke der drei ausgegraben. Grazie, Antonio triplo!

Und wie immer bleibt sich Potter treu: Es erklingen geistliche Werke dieser Komponisten. Selbst die 'Repertoire'-Motette Nisi Dominus von Vivaldi klingt nicht trivial; ich will sogar sagen, dass dies eine der besten Wiedergaben ist, die ich je gehört habe - stimmlich und vor allem stilistisch.

Vokal- und Instrumentalwerke von drei Antonios enthält diese CD von Audite: Antonio Lotti, Antonio Caldara und Antonio Vivaldi. In einem Programm, das ebenso eklektisch wie stilistisch vielfältig ist, stellt der Countertenor Alex Potter sein Talent unter Beweis. Sein goldenes Timbre und seine elegante Stimmführung sind ein Gewinn für die gesungenen Stücke.

La Festa Musicale verbindet quicklebendiges Musizieren mit Ausdruck und Energie. Das führt zu einem farbig-vitalen, satten Klangbild. Dabei pflegen sie die typisch italienische, manchmal etwas rauhe Tongebung mit einem gefühlsbetonten, extrovertierten und affektreichen Zugriff.

La Festa Musicale combines lively music-making with expression and energy. This leads to a colorful-vital, rich sound. At the same time they cultivate the typically Italian, sometimes somewhat rough tone with an emotional, extroverted and affect-rich approach.
