Ensemble viola Hannah Strijbos

Hannah studied the violin with Coosje Wijzenbeek until she was 18 years old. In December 2011 she finished her bachelor degree in viola with the highest distinction at the Conservatoire of Amsterdam, where she studied with Marjolein Dispa. She also studied with Pierre-Henri Xuereb at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris. At the moment she is studying for her postgraduate degree at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, generously supported by the Dutch Foundation of the Performing Arts and the Prins Bernhard Cultural Foundation. Hannah won several prizes in both National and International competitions. She had lessons and masterclasses with Yuri Bashmet, Nobuko Imai, Lawrence Power, Antoine Tamestit, Michael Tree and Thomas Riebl, and she took part in several festivals throughout Europe and North America such as the Verbier Festival, IMS Prussia Cove (UK) and she studied with Pinchas Zukerman in his “Young Artist Program” in Ottawa. Hannah plays a Johannes Cuypers Viola (1776), on loan from the Dutch National Music Instrument Foundation.

Ensemble piano Ulrich Roman Murtfeld

ULRICH ROMAN MURTFELD, born in 1970 in Frankfurt/Main, Germany, began his professional piano education in Frankfurt at Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory. As a fellow at Phillips Academy Andover, he continued his piano studies with Veronica Jochum in Boston/USA. The Romanian piano pedagogues Ana Pitiş and Ioana Minei Decisive (Bucharest) had a decisive impact on Murtfeld’s artistic development as well as Karl-Heinz Kämmerling at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. He found additional artistic inspiration in the Lied class of Hartmut Höll and in master classes with Sergei Dorensky (Salzburg/Moscow) and François-René Duchâble (Paris). Murtfeld, who is also a certified Natural Scientist, passed the concert exam at the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe/Germany with distinction in 2003. During the same year he was the "Brahmshaus"- Scholar of the Brahms Society in Baden-Baden. As a soloist, Murtfeld has performed in numerous European countries as well as in Brazil and Venezuela. He has appeared at important festivals such as Auftakt Alte Oper Frankfurt, Kasseler Musiktage, Musikfest Bremen, Thüringer Bachwochen, Festwochen Gmunden, Schloss Elmau and the Festival 2D2N (Odessa). He has given master classes at the University of Brasília and at the National Conservatory in Baku/Azerbaijan. Frequent appearances with chamber music partners round off his artistic activities. Ulrich Roman Murtfeld’s repertoire ranges from Bach to New Music. Characteristic of his concert programs is an innovative and unusual selection of works. Murtfeld has premiered many contemporary works and has co-operated closely with composers such as Jose Antonio Almeida Prado, Violeta Dinescu, Henri Dutilleux, Moritz Eggert, Ernst-Helmuth Flammer, Bernd Franke, Adriana Hölszky, Mauricio Kagel, Art-Oliver Simon and Jörg Widmann. In lecture recitals and seminars he devotes himself also to the theoretical aspects of contemporary music. Murtfeld has completed recordings for Radio Bremen, Hessischer Rundfunk, Südwestrundfunk and Radio Romania Bucharest; his recordings were also broadcast by Radio Cultura São Paulo and the national Romanian cultural television program TV Culturale. His discography includes works by Beethoven and Brahms as well as Liszt, Farrenc, Debussy, Dutilleux and Rihm.

Ensemble cello Oren Shevlin

Oren Shevlin was born in 1969 in Oldham, England, he studied with Raphael Sommer, Boris Pergamenschikow and Frans Helmerson, at Chethams School of Music and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. He completed his studies at the Guildhall School of Music, London, and at the Hochschule für Musik, Cologne, both times with the highest honours. He was successful also at the “International Paulo Cello Competition” in Helsinki 1996 (2nd Prize) as well as at the Rostropovich Cello Competition with the 2nd Grand Prix in 2001. In addition to giving numerous Solo performances with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, Cologne (of which he has been principal cellist since 1998) he has performed as a soloist with orchestras including the Finnish Radio Symphony, Gürzenich, Moscow New Philharmonic, Helsinki Philharmonic, Cologne Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerakademie, Polish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de France. He has recorded works of Joseph Haydn for Naxos and appeared several times at the “Wigmore Hall” in London. As a soloist he has collaberated with numerous conductors including Sir André Previn, Mikhail Jurowskij, Eliahu Inbal, Peter Rundel, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Christoph Eschenbach, Emilio Pomarico, Lothar Zagrosek, and Oliver Knussen. In the last season a highlight was performances of “Seven Words” of Sofia Gubaidulina together with Elsbeth Moser under the baton of Michael Sanderling. Further to his work with his piano trio, the “Shevlin Trio”, his chamber music partners have included Pinchas Zukerman, Fazil Say, Wolfgang Christ, Christian Gerhaher, and the Auryn quartet. With his duo partner, Mariko Ashikawa, he was a prize-winner at the ARD International Competition (Cello-Piano Duo). In the 2011/2012 season he performed, amongst others, with Emilio Pomarico with whom he recorded “Dialoghi” by Luigi Dallapiccola. Highlights in the season 2012/13 included a performance of Mendelssohn Octet with Renaud Capucon, chamber-music concerts with Ida Bieler, Matthias Buchholz, a solo peformance at the “Wittener Musiktage” plus a CD recording of the Schumann Cello Concerto under the baton of Heinz Holliger. 2014 will also saw the release of a recording of solo works for Cello by Franco Donatoni on the “Edition Zeitklang” label. In the season 2015/16 Oren will perform piano-trio with Tianwa Yang and Nicholas Rimmer and the world premiere of a Concerto for Cello and Chamber Orchestra by composer Marco Stroppa at the Witten Festival for new music in 2017. He is a founding member of the “Kammermusik für Köln” chamber concert series. Oren Shevlin plays a Matteo Goffriller (1730) and a very rare John Frederick Lott cello (1850).
