The first two discs in this ‘Complete [Grieg] Symphonic Works’ series were outstanding. This third is wholly exceptional. Gramophone Eivind Aadland is one of Norway’s most respected conductors. He was Chief Conductor and Artistic Leader of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra for seven seasons from 2004, during which time he conducted the complete Beethoven and Mahler symphony cycles. His extensive work with Scandinavian orchestras includes regular guest engagements with the Oslo and Bergen Philharmonics, the Stavanger Symphony, the Gothenburg Symphony and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra. In addition Aadland has conducted critically acclaimed productions of Don Giovanni, Le nozze di Figaro, Die Zauberflöte and Die Fledermaus for Den Norske Opera, Oslo. Aadland has also worked extensively in the Far East and Australia. In 2010 he led the Trondheim Symphony on a seven-concert tour to China and made his debut with the KBS Symphony Orchestra in Seoul. In 2011 he launched his tenure as Principal Guest Conductor of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Brisbane. His strong rapport with orchestral musicians flows from his experience as concertmaster of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (1981-89) and subsequent work as Music Director of the European Union Chamber Orchestra (1987-97). Aadland studied violin with Yehudi Menuhin and took part in chamber music performances with his teacher in London, Paris and Switzerland; he also received conducting lessons from Jorma Panula and was encouraged to pursue a career as a conductor by Mariss Jansons. Eivind Aadland is a frequent visitor to the Oslo Philharmonic and WDR Symphony Orchestra Köln. He has also worked with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Gürzenich Orchester Köln, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Lausanne and Scottish Chamber Orchestras and the symphony orchestras of Melbourne, Tasmania, Iceland, Finnish Radio, Bamberg and SWR Stuttgart. His recent engagements have included debut performances with the Rotterdam and Seoul Philharmonics and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. He crowned his Trondheim Symphony Orchestra Mahler cycle in March 2011 with the composer’s Eighth Symphony, the ‘Symphony of a Thousand’. Engagements during the 2014/15 season include the Trondheim and Iceland Symphony Orchestras, a return to the Bergen Philharmonic to conduct a new visualisation by German artist Alexander Polzin of Grieg’s Peer Gynt with further performances by the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra. Aadland will also return to the Oslo Philharmonic and WDR Köln for performances and recording. Further engagements include the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestre National de Belgique and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Eivind Aadland’s prolific discography spans a broad repertoire range and underlines his status as a tireless champion of Norwegian music. In August 2013 the Audite label issued the third instalment of a five-volume set of Grieg’s complete symphonic works, recorded with the WDR Symphony Orchestra. He has recorded the symphonic works of Eivind Groven; an album of Norwegian orchestral favourites, and the complete music for violin and orchestra of Arne Nordheim with the Stavanger Symphony for BIS Records. The conductor’s catalogue also includes a recording with the Bergen Philharmonic of Ludwig Irgens-Jensen's works and the music of Ole Bull with the Trondheim Symphony on the Simax label, as well as two CDs devoted to the orchestral music of Irgens-Jensen and Gerhard Schjelderup for CPO Records. He has also recorded for Hyperion, ASV, IMP Classics and Koch. Aadland recently recorded an album for EMI Classics with the Norwegian trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, complete with transcriptions and arrangements of songs by, among others, Grieg, Strauss, Dvořák, Sibelius, Korngold, Mahler and Weill. In addition to his career as a conductor, Eivind Aadland is a devoted collector of, and authority on, contemporary art. His private collection encompasses works in the diverse media of painting, photography, video and installation and is widely considered to be among the most important of its kind in Scandinavia.

Die koreanische Pianistin Hyun-Jung Kim-Schweiker, jeweils dreifache 1. Preisträgerin des Hankuk-Ilbo, des Chosun-Ilbo, des Pusan Culture Society Klavierwettbewerbs, und die erste Preisträgerin des Wolganumaksa und des Cherry Blossom Klavierwettbewerbs, debutierte bereits als Dreizehnjährige mit Beethovens 1. Klavierkonzert mit dem Royal Symphony Orchestra Pusan. Schon während ihres Studiums bei Prof. Ulla Graf an der Hochschule für Musik Köln ( Bestnote und Auszeichnung mit Zulassung zum Konzertexamen im Abschlussdiplom) und bei Prof. Andrzej Ratusinski an der Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart startete die für den „International Classical Music Award 2015“ nominierte Pianistin ihre internationale Konzertkarriere, die sie als Solistin und Kammermusikerin in sämtliche europäischen Länder führte. Pianist Hyun-Jung Kim-Schweiker has a sweeping technique and takes the lead role with as much personality as anyone I’ve ever encountered. Raised in Berlin by a family of musicians rich in tradition, she received her first violin lessons at a mere five years of age. At age eleven, she played her debut-concert at the Komische Oper in Berlin, and was already engaged as a soloist with distinguished orchestras of the former GDR. She began her studies at a young age the “Hanns Eisler” Music University with Professor W. Scholz. She received exceptional support by the state, until her Father fled to West Germany in 1983 upon which three arduous years marked by reprisals from the regime followed. Being 16 years old, she was able to immigrate to Western Germany with her mother and younger sister in 1986. She continued her musical education with Prof. Ulf Hoelscher in Karlsruhe, Prof. Jens Ellerman in Hannover, as well as Dorothy Delay at the Julliard School in New York. Master courses with established people such as W.Wilkomirska, R. Ricci, H. Krebbers and Z. Bron were precious impetuses for her artistic career. She is the prize-winner of the Bach-Wettbewerb Leipzig, the Concertino Praga and the Concours Maria Canal in Barcelona. Henceforth, her extensive concert activity leads her to various countries in Europe as well as to American and Asia. Amongst others, she performed with conductors such as Antoni Wit, Arpad Joo, Moshe Atzmon, Julia Jones, Toshiyuki Kamioka and Georg Hanson. From 1998 to 2002, she was the first concert master of the Sinfonieorchester Wuppertal, and from 2006 to 2010, second soloist in the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. She received regular invitations to perform as a concert master at the Düsseldorfer Oper, Frankfurter Oper and the WDR in Cologne. This experience as concert master in renowned Orchestras proved to be a fruitful and inspiring time. Yet her particular interest lies in chamber music. She founded the Trio Testore together with the Pianist Hyun Jung Kim-Schweiker and the Cellist Hans-Christian Schweiker in the year 2000. Since then, it accompanies and enriches her artistic path. In addition to its extensive concert activity, the Trio instituted its own chamber music festival “Mai – Klassik” in celebration of its 10th anniversary. Their complete recordings of Brahms’s trios on SACD Surround appeared in April 2013 on the Label Audite. An additional recording of works by Rachmaninov and Tchaikowsky was released in August 2014 on the same Label, going on to being nominated for the “International Classic Music Award 2015”. Since 2002, the most intimate language of the chamber music has bound her to her artistic partner at the Piano, Detlev Eisinger. Their first CD, with works by Beethoven, Mozart and Brahms appeared 2014 on the Label Musicom. Another CD with all Grieg Sonatas will be published mid-2015 with the Label Audite. Since 2014, the String Trio Lirico has been part of her artistic path. Besides her passion for music, a yearning for poetry and the wish to express the events of her life in her own words has accompanied her since a young age. Especially the style of the poem has always fascinated her. Akin to music, it invites a deep freedom of the soul, orchestrated through rhythm and dramaturgy. Music and poetry constitute mutual influences and inspirations for her artistic life. Her Poems will now be released for the first time by the Karin Fischer Verlag in the middle of the year, together with works by the artist Nasrah Nefer. Franziska Pietsch plays a Violin crafted by Carlo Antonio Testore (Milan) in 1751.

Hans-Christian Schweiker studierte Violoncello bei Boris Pergamenschikow und Kammermusik beim Amadeus-Quartett an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Der für den „International Classical Music Award 2015“ nominierte Musiker startete schon zu Beginn seiner Studienzeit seine umfangreiche internationale Konzerttätigkeit, die den 1. Preisträger des internationalen Kammermusikwettbewerbs in Citta di Castello (Italien) als Solist und als Kammermusikpartner des Amadeus-Quartetts, von Tibor Varga, Bruno Giuranna, Boris Pergamenschikow, Martin Spangenberg, Veronika Hagen, Hariolf Schlichtig, James Creitz, Eszter Haffner, Othmar Müller, Judith Ingolfsson, Andres Mustonen und vielen anderen in sämtliche Länder Europas, mehrfach in die USA und nach Südafrika führte. Einladungen in Musikzentren wie Mailand, Wien, Brüssel, London, Bordeaux, Hamburg (Musikhalle), Köln (Philharmonie), Stuttgart (Liederhalle), Düsseldorf (Tonhalle) Schwetzinger Festspiele, Bachwoche Ansbach, Bachtage Potsdam und andere sind Stationen seines künstlerischen Schaffens. Zusammen mit der Pianistin Hyun-Jung Kim-Schweiker konzertiert er im DUO CON AURA, das die beiden mit Martin Spangenberg (Klarinette) zum Trio erweitern. Seit 2000 ist er Cellist des TRIO TESTORE, das seit dieser Zeit in weiten Teilen Europas konzertiert. 2001 erschien seine neue Urtextausgabe der Suiten für Violoncello solo von J.S. Bach beim Ries & Erler Verlag in Berlin. Seit dieser Zeit gilt Hans-Christian Schweiker als gefeierter Bach-Interpret. Über seine Bach Interpretationen schreiben die Badischen Neuesten Nachrichten: „...eine Kunst, die nur den Großen ihres Faches gelingt. Und zu ihnen gehört mit Sicherheit Hans-Christian Schweiker. Man muss es gehört haben...“ 2011 gründete er das MAI KLASSIK KAMMERMUSIKFESTIVAL, dessen künstlerischer Leiter er seit dieser Zeit ist. Als äußerst erfolgreicher Pädagoge wirkt der langjährige Assistent von Boris Pergamenschikow und Dozent Internationaler Meisterklassen seit 1991 als Professor für Violoncello an der Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln. Seine ehemaligen Studenten, mehrere davon schon selbst Professoren, sind Preisträger aller großen internationalen Violoncellowettbewerbe ( u.a. ARD Wettbewerb, Casals Wettbewerb, Feuermann Wettbewerb, Tschaikowsky Wettbewerb, Rostropowitsch Wettbewerb...) und wurden Solocellisten der großen Orchester Europas. Hans-Christian Schweiker produzierte CDs bei den Labels TGF Records, Orplid Records und Audite, die von der internationalen Fachpresse wie Gramophone (England), Scherzo (Spanien) CD des Monats, Crescendo (Belgien) „beste Gesamteinspielung“, Fono Forum (Deutschland), Pizzicato (Luxemburg), Fanfare (USA), Record Review (England) und Anderen hervorragend rezensiert wurden. Rundfunk- und Fernsehaufnahmen bei allen europäischen Sendern dokumentieren seinen künstlerischen Werdegang. Hans-Christian Schweiker spielt ein Violoncello von Carlo Giuseppe Testore (Mailand 1711).

Wilfried Rombach (Tenor) erhielt seine erste musikalische Ausbildung als Mitglied der Freiburger Domsingknaben. Nach dem Studium der Kath. Kirchenmusik und Gesang an den Musikhochschulen Karlsruhe und Mannheim (u.a. bei Reginaldo Pinheiro, Alejandro Ramirez und Gerd Türk) war er mehrere Jahre freiberuflich als Oratorientenor und Gesangspädagoge tätig und wirkte als Mitglied namhafter Ensembles der Alten Musik, so unter der Leitung von Hermann Max, Frieder Bernius oder Thomas Hengelbrock. Seit 1999 ist Wilfried Rombach Kantor an der Kath. Stadt- und Universitätskirche St. Johannes in Tübingen und daneben freier Mitarbeiter im SWR-Vokalensemble Stuttgart. Dort ist er regelmäßig Mitwirkender bei Uraufführungen namhafter Komponisten (Zender, Holliger, Kurtag u.a.). Als Leiter des von ihm gegründeten Ensemble Officium genießt seine Arbeit im Bereich der Geistlichen Musik des Mittelalters und der Renaissance hohe Anerkennung und ist vielfach durch CD-Produktionen und Rundfunkmitschnitte dokumentiert.
