The 17 Church Sonatas are performed here by a string ensemble of 11 "historic" instruments, plus organ (of course, additional instruments--oboes, trumpets, horns, and timpani--are required for several of the sonatas). Unfortunately, the program notes do not divulge anything about the identity of these historic instruments or give any information on the Johann Christian Bach Academy, whose playing is wonderfully precise, detailed, in tune, and polished and will afford a wealth of listening pleasure in these ceaselessly charming works of the young Mozart. Sometimes it becomes a bit too aggressive for my taste and is not always as responsive to the individual character of each sonata as one might wish. But these are minor criticisms.

A major one is the inaudibility of the organ for 90% of the time. To be sure, these are not really organ sonatas where the organ has a solo role except in the last one of the series, K 328 in C. But the organ supplies the harmonic underpinning for a three-voice texture, where the two violins are treated primarily as soprano instruments--not the most ideally formulated of trio textures. Thus, the voice of the organ in this music is absolutely indispensable, yet it can seldom be heard in this recording. Another negative is presented by the random order of the sonatas-not the chronological order we normally expect.

Nevertheless, I would recommend this 1995 recording. It was made in the Christuskirche in Bruhl, near Cologne. While there is not much resonance in the room, the recorded sound is live and quite excellent. Johannes Geffert's playing of the concertante solo part in K 328 is fluent and elegant. My first choices remain the Naxos and AVM recordings, and above all, the E Power Biggs (still unavailable on CD).

Eine kühne Zusammenstellung mit Samuel Barbers "Toccata festiva", Saint-Saëns' Orgelsinfonie, Strauss' "Festlichem Einzug der Ritter des Johanniterordens" und dem Konzert "Touching colours" für Orgel und Orchester von Frank Zabel. Eingespielt hat Schmitt die Werke als erste SACD des Labels Audite auf der dreimanualigen Kuhn-Orgel in der Stiftskirche St. Arnual in Saarbrücken. Diese CD - und - in all ihrer klanglichen Pracht überzeugende - Surround-Sound-SACD-Produktion zeigt Schmitt als experimentierfreudigen, detailgenauen Klangtüftler.
Vor allem bei Zabel. Dessen nach einem Gemälde von Peter Brünings entstandene Komposition öffnet Spannungsräume in Kleinstintervallen.
Hier gepfefferte Akkorde, dort Erholung bei sinnlichen Kantilenen, mal lustvolles Schürfen im Dickicht der Dissonanzen, mal ein einzelner, frei strahlender Ton. Wenn es in der Partitur dicke kommt, gerät Schmitt so richtig in Fahrt - und mit ihm das von Johannes Wildner zu überzeugend vitalem Spiel animierte Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken.

Franck der andere - Kenner des audite-Programms dürfen sich jetzt zurücklehnen: Dieser Franck hat nichts mit César zu tun, sondern mit einer aus Breslau stammenden Bankiersfamilie. Eduard Franck war Schüler und Freund Mendelssohn, und dessen Werke sind bei audite bereits auf mehreren CDs dokumentiert. Hier geht es um zwei Klaviertrios seines Sohns Richard. Das Trio Schickedanz-Blees-Fograscher spielt einen aufgeweckten, liebevoll romantischen, wenn auch nicht immer eleganten Franck. Manchmal kommt das Cello ein wenig kurz (auch klanglich). Fulminant der Kopfsatz des h-Moll-Trios, dafür besitzt das Allegretto grazioso mehr ländlerisch Täppisches als prickelnde Frische. Trotzdem ist auch dieser Franck eine Entdeckung wert.

Mit der Oboe in eine Traumwelt - Lajos Lencsés ist ein Meister auf seinem Instrument. Das beweist der Oboist einmal mehr mit diesen hinreißend gespielten Aufnahmen. Ihm zuzuhören, sein sorgfältiges Phrasieren zu bewundern, seinen wohlgeformten und wirklich schönen und warmen Ton goutieren, das ist ein Genuss fürs Ohr. Die CD hat ein Programm und sie hält darin, was der Titel verspricht. Sie ist zwar dadurch recht wenig abwechslungsreich, aber wer die Ruhe hat sich der Musik hinzugeben, wird in der wunderbaren Stimmung in eine Art Traumwelt entführt.
